Registration Is Open!

28 boats are committed to competing and we are expecting 30-35 participants before racing starts. North Americans is shaping up to be the largest Ultimate 20 event ever held anywhere in the world. Teams are traveling in from all over North America from Canada, North and South Carolina, Seattle, California and from the central United States.

The Dillon Yacht Club, founded in 1968, is nestled high atop the Colorado Rocky Mountains and noted for being the nation's highest sailing club at an elevation of 9,017 feet above sea level. Go win some bar bets. Sailing and competition here is top notch...Snipe Nationals were held here in 2007.

Dillon has a very active and competitive racing program. The most popular fleet, the J-24, drew over 30 entries to last year's Dillon Open which is Colorado's premier sailing event. Other fleets active in Dillon include J-80's, Ensign 22's, Etchells 22, Santana 22's, Stars, J-22 fleet, and an active PHRF fleet.


The club has roughly 160 members and growing every year. The season kicks off with the annual "Social Spring Party" held over the Memorial Day weekend. The sailing season starts in the first of June with an active schedule of one design and PHRF racing with events nearly every weekend from June until late September. The season ends with the year banquet party held at the end of October.

U20 Wyoming Governors Cup Results

Surrounded by colorful sandstone cliffs, Lake Alcova is a desirable destination for it's beauty alone. Add to that mild temperatures, a great Yacht club facility with a fine restaurant, a bar, friendly staff and club members and Alcova becomes a premier destination for sailboat racing. But the real reason that the U20 fleet goes to Alcova year after year is none of the above. We go for the wind, and lots of it. However, the 2010 Wyoming Governors Cup turned out to be a light wind challenge.

On Saturday we were lucky to get in 2 races in the light breeze. Jim Ulatowski scored bullets in both races. Sunday started with 2 points separating each of the 4 boats in attendance. After bobbing around on the lake for two hours on Sunday morning, racing was postponed ashore. As soon as all the U's were sitting on their trailers, the breeze filled in from the west. Race committee went back out but the U20 fleet decided to call it a day.

 

We watched as the catamarans were having a great time in the 12+ knot breeze. It was disappointing that we didn't have any races on Sunday, but this fleet doesn't make the 4.5 - 5 hour drive to Alcova for 12 knots of wind, we make the trip for 20 knots. 

This anomaly in the winds won't deter us from going back to Alcova; the odds are that the wind will be back to normal next year. Six boats were originally scheduled to attend this year, but life can get in the way of our plans at times. Congrats to Jim Ulatowski and crew on their win at Alcova.

The Aspen Open is next on the weekend of July 17-18. As usual, Patti and I will be there the week prior to the regatta fishing the Frying Pan river. We welcome any of you to join us for some truly world class fly fishing.

Denver Sailing Association

Denver Sailing Association (DSA) is a competitive sailing and racing organization located in Denver, Colorado. The club has an extensive racing program from April through October including annual regattas bringing some of the best talent in the State to compete.

DSA currently has active one-design fleets including J24s, U20s, Santana 20s, Lightnings and Lasers. We also have active PHRF and OOAK classes on the lake. You can find us on the water every Wednesday night racing keelboats or on Thursday racing dinghies. Please come on down and see what we are all about!

NOOD Regattas - What is NOOD Racing?

 

National Offshore One-Design

Created by Sailing World in 1988, NOOD (National Offshore One-Design) regattas attract close to 2,000 boats and more than 30,000 competitors and spectators annually. Each event in the series features three days of sailboat racing for one-design models from 20 to 70 feet in length. In addition to local sailors, sailing's top stars - including America's Cup and Olympic champions - are well-represented at the NOODs. Competitive sailors rate the NOODs as the top national event in each region of the country.
